Filmen The Hurricane är delvis baserad på Hurricanes, det vill säga Rubin Carters självbiografiska bok ”The 16th Round” och delvis på Sam Chaiton and Terry Swintons bok ”Lazarus and the Hurricane”.

Here comes the story of the Hurricane

And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flash in'

Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driven' around

Number one contender for the middleweight crown

Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down

When a cop pulled him over the side of the road

Just like the time before and the time before that

In Paterson that’s just the way things go

If you're black you might as well not show up on the street

‘Less you wanta draw the heat

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops

Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling’ around

He said, “I saw two men runnin’ out, they looked like middleweights

They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates”

And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head

Cop said “Wait a minute boys, this one’s not dead”

So they took him to the infirmary

And though this man could hardly see

They told him that he could identify the guilty men

Four in the morning’ and they haul Rubin in

Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs

The wounded man looks up through his one dyin’ eye

Says, “Wha’d you bring him in here for? He ain’t the guy!”

Så sjunger Bob Dylan i sin och Jacques Levys ballad “Hurricane” på sin kanske bästa platta “Desire”. Sången är nästa 9 minuter lång och jag har inte återgivit ens halva texten på grund av copyrightlagarna. Fast den är så bra att den skulle förtjäna att återutges precis överallt.

Filmen The Hurricane är producerad av filmens huvudrollsinnehavare Denzel Washington och man kan förstå att han vände sig just till Norman Jewison för att denne skulle filma historien. Jewison har nämligen tidigare övertygat oss att han är en kompetent skildrare av rasmotsättningar – In the Heat of the Night – boxning – F.I.S.T. – martyrer – Jesus Christ Superstar – och den tvivelaktiga rättvisan – And Justice For All.

Att Rubin ”Hurricane” Carter utsattes för ett justitiemord är det ingen tvekan om. Om han skulle blivit världsmästare i mellanvikt kan man däremot ha olika uppfattningar om: två gånger förlorade han mot Joey Giardello som var regerande världsmästare mellan 7 december 1963 och 21 oktober 1965.

The Hurricane soundtracket är tilltalande: En del rap, utmärkt soul och så blues. Trots den underbara musiken är det ändå ett utpräglat lyssna-noga-på-ord-soundtrack. Synd att skivbolaget inte ville kosta på sig att bifoga en boklett med alla dessa tänkvärda och underfundiga ord.
