Interview with THE ORPHAN’S ARMS

Hi guys! Tell us about yourselves! How did you meet?
We might while working at some generic high street label in Brick Lane. Jay had been there for ages and Josh joined after graduating from Saint Martins. We were there for about another 3 years before we got fired.
How did your brand The Orphan's Arms get born?
While at this company we got sick of being told to design the same old stuff every season so we decided to join forces and set up our own more distinctive label in secret.
We started off by selling hand printed t-shirts on Brick Lane market in East London, and it got such a great response we decided to attend our first trade show at London Fashion Week in 2010. Our first collection was just a range of simple hand dyed t-shirts, tanks and hoodies but we ended up with orders from shops like Dover Street Market and Urban Outfitters.
The Orphan’s Arms is heavily influenced by traditional English imagery/culture so we decided to name ourselves after a pub. Our prints often contain a narrative or some kind of romantic symbolism and we like the fact that it probably wont appeal to everyone.
What's your relation to fashion? Do you often think about how you dress?
We both never intended to get into fashion, but for jay it somehow happened at the last minute and he he’s not a quitter so he stuck at it and did a bloody good job of it! Josh...
With all our energy spent designing clothes for other people we tend to forget about how we dress ourselves, normally we’ll just wear whatever is easy, like a t-shirt and jeans. Jay has 7 pairs of identical black trousers he has on rotation which he combines with unprinted TOA tees and sweats. Josh sleeps all day and works all night so only he knows what kind of clothes he wears.
What's your goals for the future?
We’d like to buy an old pub and turn it into a shop. But a nice pub with wooden floors, brass fittings and flowers under the windows - not one of those pubs with blacked-out windows, no women and blood on the door.
